My Real Journey: From Poor Communication to Interview Confidence
This post describes my real-life journey. It is not an example story and it is not copied from anyone else’s experience. Everything shared here is based on my personal struggles and lessons.
I come from a very small rural area where educational resources were limited. I completed my entire schooling and intermediate education in a local-language medium school. For almost 12 years of my education, there were very few facilities that helped us learn modern skills or improve our communication abilities. In fact, most of us were not even aware of how important communication skills would be for our future careers.
In our school and college environments, we always used our local language to express our thoughts, presentations, and ideas. English communication was rarely practiced, and there were no proper opportunities to develop confidence in speaking or presenting in English.
Later, I joined an engineering college. I believed that this would be the place where I could improve my skills and prepare for the professional world. However, even there I did not receive proper guidance or mentorship about the importance of communication skills, interview preparation, or professional development.
Somehow, I managed to complete my engineering degree. Although I had basic technical knowledge, my communication skills were still very weak. I had very little confidence when speaking in English, and I had never experienced a professional interview environment before.
Struggling With Communication in Interviews? Here Is My Real Journey
After completing my degree, the real world slowly started showing me the realities of professional life. I realized that academic knowledge alone is not enough to succeed. Communication, confidence, and the ability to present your knowledge clearly are equally important.
After completing my engineering, I started applying for jobs without proper guidance. I did not have anyone to explain how interviews work or how to prepare for them. I simply applied for jobs wherever I could and hoped for an opportunity.
Eventually, I received my first interview call. It was a face-to-face interview. At that moment, I felt excited because it was my first chance to enter the professional world. However, I had no idea what was waiting for me.
Until that day, I had never experienced the fear and nervousness that comes during an interview. I had not practiced even a simple introduction about myself. I did not know how to explain my skills, my projects, or my background in English.
When the interview started, I suddenly felt completely blank. Fear and nervousness took over my mind. My confidence disappeared within a few seconds. I struggled to answer even simple questions.
That moment was very painful for me. I felt like my life had stopped there. I thought I would never be able to crack even a single interview with my current communication skills.
After that experience, I realized a harsh truth: technical knowledge alone is not enough. Communication skills play a huge role in interviews and career growth.
At that time, I did not even have money to join communication training institutes. I had no mentors to guide me, and even my friends were in the same situation. They were also struggling and did not know how to improve communication skills.
I continued attending interviews, but each interview made me realize how much I needed to improve myself.
Finally, I decided to return to my village for some time. I packed my things and went back home. But the situation there felt even more difficult.
People around me could not understand what I was going through. There was pressure from family and society. Many people thought that I had failed in life. At that moment, I felt like a useless person in the family.
It felt like every door in my life had closed.
Those were very difficult days. Unlike today, we did not have easy access to the internet, online courses, or unlimited learning resources. Learning new skills was much harder at that time.
Sometimes I even asked myself painful questions:
“Is my life already finished?”
“Will I ever succeed?”
“Is there any way to change my situation?”
Many people might ask now, “How did you survive that time?”
Honestly, I had almost the same question in my mind during those days.
